Work Based Learning

An Introduction to Apprenticeships

This information is for YOU, it aims to explain all about Work Based Learning, and answer your questions about how to access Work Based Learning Apprenticeships and the support available to you at York College to enhance your learning experience.

What is Work Based Learning?
Work Based Learning (WBL) is the general name given to Apprenticeship training programmes.

What is an Apprentice?
As an Apprentice on a Work Based Learning programme you will learn while working to build your knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.

What will I be learning?
There are different levels of Apprenticeship available, but they all lead to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Key Skills qualifications and, in most cases, a technical certificate such as a BTEC or City & Guilds. You will receive a certificate for each of these as you achieve them, as well as receiving a certificate once you have completed and achieved all aspects of your Apprenticeship programme.

Am I eligible for an Apprenticeship?
You do not have to pay for an Apprenticeship. However, you need to be living in England, aged 16-24 and not taking part in full-time education. You will also need to be working with an employer for at least 30 hours per week. It is also important to keep in mind that you may need to buy materials, clothing and books for some programmes.

What Apprenticeships are available at York College?
Which Apprenticeship is right for you will depend on your experience and the opportunities in your area.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no specific entry requirements in most areas but you do need enthusiasm and commitment for your chosen career. However, applicants for childcare must provide references, and those for plumbing will be asked to complete an aptitude test. There may be other requirements depending on which Apprenticeship you choose. Please refer to the detailed information sheet for each course.

You must obtain employment before you can be offered a place on the course.

You must also attend and be successful at an interview.

Plumbers and electricians will need to do an aptitude test.

Is there support available for Speakers of other languages?
English Programmes are available for people who are, or intending to become, long term UK residents. Potential Apprentices need to start with a short English Taster course. No qualifications or experience are required. Courses are provided by York College and also by the City of York Council, Adult and Community Education. General English Skills and Reading and Writing classes are also available.

How long does an Apprenticeship take?
Two to three years depending on which Apprenticeship you choose. Most of your training is done while you are at work; you will probably need to attend college, normally for one day a week.

How will I be assessed?
You will be required to show that you are capable of doing a particular task to the same standard each time. This will be done via practical assessments and assessment of your portfolio, which is a collection of examples or evidence of your work such as photos or a work diary, which show your skills and ability. You may also be required to complete a variety of assignments to prove your knowledge and understanding of your work, and there will be some tests.

What can I do next?
Most young people who achieve an Apprenticeship find they have learnt the necessary skills to be considered for promotion and other career opportunities. Alternatively you may want to continue further training at college or university.
